VIRTUAL Dr. Temple Grandin: The Hidden Gifts of Visual Thinkers

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Glencoe Public Library
Virtual
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO TUESDAY, JUNE 4.

Join us for a special event with Dr. Temple Grandin, one of the world’s most accomplished and well-known adults with autism. Dr. Grandin has been at the forefront of research and activism for autism and neurodiversity for decades and has written many books on those subjects, with a specific focus on visual thinking. Her book, Thinking in Pictures, upended the way the world understood autism, and her latest, Visual Thinking, published more than twenty-five years later, was an instant New York Times bestseller.

REGISTER HERE for this Zoom program. A recording will be available for a limited time on the Illinois Libraries Present YouTube channel, and a link will be emailed to all registrants.

Although not formally diagnosed with autism until adulthood, Dr. Temple Grandin learned from a young age that she processed her environment in a vastly different way from her peers. Dr. Grandin's memoir, Emergence: Labeled Autistic, was published in 1986, and she has continued to write about autism and neurodivergence over the decades. Dr. Grandin used her experience with neurodivergence to advocate for better treatment and handling of livestock and is an expert in animal behavior. She holds a Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois and is a faculty member at Colorado State University. Her most recent book is Visual Thinking: The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions.

This event is made possible by Illinois Libraries Present, a statewide collaboration among public libraries offering premier events. ILP is funded in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

IN LIBRARY Streamline Moderne and the Rise of American Industrial Design

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Glencoe Public Library
Hammond Room
Following World War I, American industrial designers stepped forth to revolutionize man-made objects for a booming consumer market. Glencoe architect and art commentator Joseph Madda will delve into the amazing worlds of the Big Four—designers Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy—as they changed the way America looked, from Art Deco to Streamline Moderne and beyond.

This program will be recorded; register to receive a link to the video. Walk-ins welcome!

About the presenter: Joseph Madda is a licensed architect, educator and author of short fiction, design commentary, and communications essays. After growing up in Chicago, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Georgetown University and a master’s degree in architecture at Harvard University. A 40-year, award-winning design and construction career in Los Angeles followed in which he participated in over 500 projects around the globe. He returned to the Midwest in 2015, where he concentrated on the power of words. He has presented to many cultural, governmental and institutional organizations, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the U. S. Naval Facilities Command, the American Institute of Architects, Loyola University/Chicago School of Medicine, Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, and Open House Chicago. He has a special interest in cross-disciplinary examinations of American culture and in its artistic, socioeconomic and technological milieus.
