What's the next big leap in the quantum revolution? Building a quantum computer, of course! Physicist Elizabeth Goldschmidt will start with an overview of the history and basics of quantum mechanics, from Einstein's spooky action at a distance and Schrodinger's ill-fated cat to the full understanding that we have today of how the world works at a microscopic level. Then she'll explain current work to harness the weirdness of quantum mechanics to build an exponentially more powerful type of computer--and why you can't buy a quantum iPhone just yet. Dr. Goldschmidt is a Glencoe native and a physicist in the quantum information science group at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland. Her research is in experimental quantum optics and quantum information, studying the interaction of light and matter at a quantum mechanical level.
