Londinium: A Digger's Eye View of Roman London

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Glencoe Public Library

Event Details

In 43 AD, the Romans founded the city of Londinium in the marshy Thames Valley. The city survived fire and rebellion and grew from a small trading port to the provincial capitol of Britain with up to 60,000 residents. Former Glencoe resident Ellen Green returns to explore what day to day life would have been like in Londinium and how archaeologists are able to reconstruct the urban landscape from what was left behind. In particular she will discuss discoveries made on recent digs she participated in, including the Harper Road sarcophagus (the first of its kind found in 18 years and one of only three ever found in London) and a series of Roman workshops unearthed next to the city wall. Ms. Green has worked as an archaeologist in Transylvania, York, Durham, and London. Currently a field archaeologist for Pre-Construct Archaeology, she has a BA in archaeology and ancient civilizations and a MSc in paleopathology from the University of Durham, and specializes in human remains. She is firmly of the belief that nothing is better than a day spent down a hole, covered in mud, looking for interesting things.
