Certainly Shakespeare fills his only play named for a holiday with “rare accidents”: survival of shipwreck\, masquerade as the opposite sex\, and twins mistaken for each other. Its alternate title\, \;What You Will\, conveys holiday’s appeal: release from the strictures of routine by which will is subject to rule. What could be rarer than to see the censorious Malvolio subject to that Lord of Misrule\, Sir Toby? \; \;But what pleases most is love’s unruliness--the triangle of Orsino\, Olivia\, and Viola and the tangle of Antonio\, Sebastian\, and Olivia. Beside these complications Shakespeare sets the sweet melancholy of Feste and the dull wit of Sir Andrew and hangs over all the darkness of Malvolio’s promise of revenge. \;For three weeks we will follow Shakespeare’s lead in reflecting on the role of holiday in life.
