Event Details

This three-part discussion series will examine three major paintings that have captivated both art historians and casual museumgoers for centuries. Each one is a masterpiece; the three are linked thematically by the presence of a mirror and the artistic exploration of reflection, both real and metaphorical. Modeled on the library's Big Books format but with a visual rather than textual emphasis, this course will encourage participants to look closely at paintings and consider their potential to communicate to an individual viewer while also engaging with (or challenging) art historical tradition.

The series will led by art historian (and Glencoe resident) Julie Harris, a specialist in the art of medieval Iberia who has taught art history at Northwestern University and Skidmore College, among others. She was recently awarded a Center for Spain in America fellowship at the Clark Institute (Williamstown, Mass.) for her project on the decorative "carpet" pages of Iberian Hebrew bibles. Her publications have appeared in numerous academic journals. She also is part of an international team of scholars researching medieval treasures in Spain.

Registration is required. Participation in all three discussions is strongly encouraged. Space is limited and preference will be given to Glencoe residents if registration fills up. Digitized visual and written material for discussion will be distributed before each class. The classes will not be recorded.
