REVISITING TWO ICONIC WESTERNS: HIGH NOON & THE SEARCHERS

Join film scholar Francine J. Sanders for a look at two masterpieces from one of the defining genres in American cinema. We'll explore the role of race, the hero, the landscape and other genre conventions, as well as how the films also provide insight into the political and social climate of the 50’s era. You'll need to watch the film on your own prior to the discussion; if you'd like help with viewing options, please call the library's Reference Desk. You're welcome to attend one or both of the discussions, but attending both will give you the best experience. If you wish to attend both of the discussions, you'll need to sign up separately.

Sunday, July 18, 1-2:30 pm: High Noon (dir. Fred Zinnemann, 1952) A town marshal must face a gang of deadly killers alone when the gang leader, an outlaw he sent up years ago, arrives on the noon train. With Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. 

Sunday, July 25, 1-2:30 pm: The Searchers (dir. John Ford, 1956) Starring John Wayne, this revered classic traces a Civil War veteran on a journey to rescue his niece from the Comanche tribe.
